Again Strike in Bengal medical College, 12 doctors are suspended for date of a pregnant woman. A 31 Year-old lady who gave birth on Wednesday (January 8, 2025) died on Thursday (January 9, 2025). The main claim is that ‘Expire Saline’ caused the death. It’s known as Ringer’s Lactate (RL) saline.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, banned 12 senior physicians and postgraduate students from Medinipur Medical College and Hospital on Thursday. For their “Negligence” following a woman’s death during childbirth.
Six Postgraduate trainees, the medical Superintendent-cum-Vice Principal of the hospital. A senior Resident Physician, two Assistant Professors, the Director of the Department. And the Resident Medical Officer of Medinipur Medical College and Hospital are among those suspended.
▪️Cause Behind The Suspension:
Last week, a lady died and three others became very unwell after giving birth at a state-run medical institution. The relatives of the victims claimed that the medical staff administered expired intravenous (IV) fluids to the women, worsening their medical conditions. As a result, authorities suspended 12 doctors at Bengal Medical College for this incident.

On March 22, 2024, the Karnataka government reported a company for supplying tainted saline while telling the West Bengal government. The Bengal government continued to purchase expired saline from the company for three years, despite being told it was prohibited. This was not disclosed until the death of a pregnant woman last week.

▪️Investigation & Reports :
“Our Member of Expert Panel, our special medical team, visited the hospital and sent me a report,” CM Mamta Banerjee stated. A report has also been submitted by the CID team looking into the incident. The CID’s and the special team’s reports emphasize carelessness. The woman might have been spared if the people on duty that day had done their jobs. Senior physicians were among those who were careless. They failed to carry out their responsibilities.
She further stated that the CID will continue the investigation in accordance with the law and submit a formal complaint against the doctors.
The Calcutta High Court has ordered West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to provide a report regarding claims of using expired saline in a state government hospital.
▪️ Doctor’s Stand :
Physicians have accused the state administration of trying to deflect criticism from wrongdoing in the health department. They firing six junior physicians from the anesthetic and obstetrics-gynecological (OBGN) departments.
The strike is to protest the move and express solidarity with suspended colleagues, they said.
A junior doctor stated, “We junior doctors have initiated an indefinite total shutdown to protest the termination of six colleagues from the OBGN and anesthesia departments following the death of a woman and the critical condition of three others at MMCH.”
One of the junior physicians protesting the RG Kar rape and murder case, Debashish Halder, stated during a press conference hosted by the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front: “We have asked about the three new moms’ health.” During a press conference yesterday (Monday), the Chief Secretary appeared to be attempting to frame it as a case of medical malpractice. Our concern about RL (Ringer’s Lactate) saline has never gone away. Although we have notified the administration, nothing has been done.
