India Witnessed an Unfortunate Plane Crash

India witnessed an Unfortunate Plane Crash on June 12th, Ahemdabad. No one in the country thought that they would witness such a tragic plane crash. When the common people of the country were busy with their respective work, at 01:39 pm(IST), Air India flight AI 171, bound for London, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. There were 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board the plane. Out of the 230 people, 169 were Indians, 53 were British, 7 were Portuguese and 1 was Canadian.

The Plane started losing altitude within 2-3 minutes of taking off from Ahmedabad. Due to which it crashed in the nearest residential area of Meghaninagar, 2 km away from the airport. According to flight tracking data, the plane ended up at an altitude of 625 feet (190M). The last May Day call was received from the plane. But later the air traffic control agency could not contact the plane again. The plane was loaded with a large amount of fuel to cover a long distance. As a result, the plane suffered a massive explosion after the accident. And this explosion made the accident even more tragic.

According to the latest reports, 241 of the 242 people on board the plane lost their lives at that moment. Only one Indian-origin British citizen, Biswaskumar Ramesh, who was travelling in seat no. 11A of the plane, miraculously survived from the accident.

Black Day for Medical College Hostel :

The area where the plane crashed was the doctors’ hostel and dining building of Bairamji Jijiboy Medical College and Civil Hospital. Doctors were serving lunch at the hostel when the plane crashed. Abandoned tables and plates of food were seen lying in the canteen of the crashed hostel.

A picture after the crash showed a part of the plane crashing into the roof of the hostel. An estimated 33 people from the medical college, including 241 confirmed passengers, were killed. A total of 274 people are feared dead so far.

On Friday, hospital staff tried to identify the bodies, while scores of relatives eagerly awaited for news. “We are relying on DNA matching to identify them, said Dr. Minakshi Parikh(dean of medical college & civil hospital). This is something her where we cannot rush or make mistakes.”

Primary Investigation & Rescue Operation :

Multiple fire engines and ambulances have rushed to the crash site to carry out rescue operations. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to launch a formal investigation, possibly involving a technical team from Boeing. Officials have not yet released a statement on the suspected cause of the crash. Experts believe that the high fuel load on international routes could worsen post-crash fires, complicating rescue efforts.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu wrote in Kinjarapu X that the AAIB recovered the flight data recorder (black box) from the Ahmedabad accident site within 28 hours. He stated that this significant step will greatly aid the investigation of the incident.

At the Meghaninagar police station, Ahmedabad city police have filed a case of accidental death and initiated an inquiry. According to officials, at 1:44 p.m. on Thursday, the first emergency call about the accident and fire was received.

It was the first incident involving the wide-body Dreamliner, which started operating commercial flights in 2011, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. According to FlightRadar24, the aircraft that crashed on Thursday was transferred to Air India in January 2014 after making its first flight in 2013.

Biswaskumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the plane crash, gave an interview to the media while undergoing treatment in the hospital. He said, “I still can’t believe how I came back alive. At first I thought I was going to die, I was able to open my eyes. Then I unbuckled my seat belt and tried to get out.” Mr. Ramesh also said, “The side of the plane where he was sitting did not hit the hostel and was near the ground floor. My door broke and I immediately tried to get out. When I opened my eyes and stood up, there were dead bodies around me. I got scared and ran. Someone immediately took me to the hospital in an ambulance.” He added, “His brother Ajay was travelling with him in another row of the plane. Now he is not able to find him. Please help me find him.”
